Toward Automated Chinese-to-Japanese Interpretation:
Enabling Recognition of Spoken Mandarin Chinese by ATR-MATRIX

The Spoken Language Translation Research Laboratory is currently
working on an automated Chinese-to-Japanese interpretation project. We have already
developed a prototype Chinese speech recognition system exhibiting good performance
for a specific task at ATR. This paper briefly introduces the problems we faced
in developing the Chinese speech recognition system and the approaches we have
implemented.
