How Do Humans Perceive Temporal Structures in Spoken Language?

話しことばにとってリズムは、情報の受け渡しを円滑に行なうための基本的な約束事のようなものです。私達のグループは、今、このことばのリズム、もっと一般的に言えば音声の時間構造、を耳で聞いて把握するための手がかりに興味を持っています。機械が人と同じことばのリズムを共有できるような人にやさしい通信技術への貢献を狙って、今まで直感的に説明されることの多かったリズムの手がかりの究明に、実証的な研究手法を持ち込むことより、従来は知られていなかった新しい説明が可能であることを発見しました。
Rhythms of, more generally, the temporal structure of speech sounds serve an essential
role as a form of protocol for oral communication in our search for clues that
will allow us to share such protocols between humans and machines, we extensively
examined the perception of speech rhythms by introducing empirical approaches
instead of the intuitive ones that have been commonly used in this area. Psychoacoustical
experiments revealed that the perceptual salience of the temporal cues embedded
in speech sounds can be described more effectively in terms of their fundamental
auditory base, i,e., loudness, than by linguistic factors such as syllables or
morae.
