We have constructed a video database in order that we get to investigate about the mechanism of recognizing facial expressions. The database has Japanese male and female (each 61) facial images with differing facial expressions and face angles. Stimulus persons expressed 2 kinds of anger (showing teeth and not showing), sadness, 2 kinds of smile (showing teeth and not showing), surprise, and neutral. They were videotaped from their front, profile (left side), and three quarter(left). And we conducted a experiment to evaluate validity of the database as we use it in psychological research. In the experiment, we used photographic images which were cut out from videotapes at their most expressive points. Using 7-points scale, subjects judged the facial expressions in terms of the seven categories of emotion and two impressions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise, contempt, attractivity, and friendliness. And we figured out how expressive each image was. The results suggest the easiness of recognizing showing-teeth smile and surprise. It seems that we need more examination about effects of the face angle.
