Ground Skirt Monopole Array Antenna Far Field Analysis Based on an Equivalent Weight Vector Approximation

Abstract:This paper proposes a way of simulating an adaptative array antenna, named the ESPAR antenna using HFSS software. The model that has been achieved for this simulation is proved to be accurate as for each set of reactances obtained by experimental beamforming, far field directivity patterns has been obtained similar to the experimental ones. Furthermore, Equivalent Weight Vector approximation based on reactive near field approach is also studied. The patterns obtained by conventional far field method and those obtained by this approximation show good agreements when increasing the number of points picked up on the antenna to calculate this approximation. Therefore, efforts and time can be saved thanks to this new way of characterizing the ESPAR antenna, that is easier and more economical than the experimental one. Eventually, this Simulation technique can also be used in the future to optimize the ESPAR antenna, by improving the algorithms that adaptatively control the set of reactances, which is still a hot topic.
